Mercedes Tests 2026 CLA Safety with High Speed Side Impact Crash Test

German manufacturer Mercedes has recently showcased the structural safety capabilities of its upcoming vehicle lineup through a unique high-speed crash test involving two moving units of the Mercedes CLA. This public demonstration was specifically designed to evaluate occupant protection and high-voltage battery integrity under severe side-impact conditions.

During the rigorous evaluation scenario, an electrified combustion engine CLA Shooting Brake collided directly into the driver's side of a fully electric Mercedes CLA variant. Both vehicles, each weighing well over two metric tons, traveled simultaneously at a speed of 56 kilometers per hour into the impact zone without any prior emergency braking intervention.

This particular testing methodology was deliberately structured around real-world accident data, specifically targeting the upper speed limits typically recorded during severe intersection collisions. Statistical data indicates that lateral impacts account for roughly a quarter of all traffic accidents resulting in physical injuries to vehicle occupants on public roads.

Throughout the extensive crash procedure, engineers utilized a total of eight crash-test dummies to monitor kinetic forces and cabin intrusion levels. The final results successfully demonstrated excellent occupant protection across both models, while the high-voltage battery pack housed within the electric variant remained completely intact and structurally secure following the heavy lateral blow.

In addition to physical passive safety measures, the automotive brand is also preparing the rollout of its Rescue Intelligence system, scheduled for a phased introduction starting in 2027. This upcoming technology aims to establish an automated, direct communication link between vehicles involved in severe accidents and emergency response services.
