Charles Leclerc Handed Five Second Penalty in Brazil After Clashing With Liam Lawson

A challenging race weekend for Charles Leclerc at the Interlagos circuit concluded with a disappointing twist. Hours after the checkered flag waved at the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace, the Scuderia Ferrari star was handed a five-time penalty by the FIA stewards, directly impacting the final points classification of the Formula 1 grand prix.

The controversial incident occurred during the closing stages of the race as the Monegasque driver engaged in a fierce wheel-to-wheel battle for seventh place against Liam Lawson. Television replays showed the Ferrari pilot making slight contact with the Racing Bulls machine while diving down the inside at Turn 12, a move that ultimately allowed him to snatch the position on track.

Following a thorough post-race investigation involving telemetry data, video evidence, and hearings with both drivers, the FIA race control determined that the Ferrari driver was at fault for failing to avoid a collision in a corner where his rival was fully entitled to racing room.

In their official ruling statement, the stewards noted, "Although the contact was minor and car 30 was able to continue, the driver of car 30 argued that the contact damaged his rear-left wheel rim and the move also allowed car 16 to close in and subsequently overtake him five corners later." The panel firmly established that the minor bump created a direct sporting advantage by disrupting the rival's momentum.

While the Ferrari driver defended his racecraft by arguing it was a minor racing incident with minimal impact, the stewards factored in the tricky wet track conditions as a mitigating factor to reduce the sanction to a five-second penalty rather than a harsher ten-second reprimand. Consequently, this time penalty demoted him from seventh to eighth place in the final official classification.
