Cadillac Formula 1 driver and amateur cyclist Valtteri Bottas has opened up about his demanding three-day bike ride from Malaysia to Singapore, featuring unique wildlife encounters and offering a crucial mental reset following a difficult race weekend at Sepang.
The one-off double header featuring Malaysia and Singapore, arranged to accommodate the Bahrain Grand Prix at a guest venue, made logical and financial sense while providing the F1 paddock a rare chance to explore a fascinating region of the racing calendar.
While most sane individuals would opt for the quick one-hour hop across the Malacca strait to cover the 360km stretch between the two cities, Valtteri Bottas is certainly not like most people. When his partner, professional cyclist and Australian gravel champion Tiffany Cromwell, casually suggested he should ride his Canyon gravel bike, the Finnish driver did not instantly dismiss the concept.

"I think Tiffany mentioned it as kind of like a joke. 'Hey, you could just ride from there, it's not that far.' And then I was like: 'Hmm, maybe I could...'" Bottas explained on Thursday after successfully completing the journey during the three-day gap between back-to-back race events.
An avid gravel rider who previously qualified for the world championships, the Cadillac driver carefully planned the adventure with local gravel experts who knew the route intimately. He strategically front-loaded his trip with longer rides on Monday and Tuesday to ensure his performance ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix weekend would not be compromised.
