Australian MotoGP FP1 Results: Marc Marquez Sets Early Pace

Marc Marquez immediately laid down the gauntlet by securing the fastest lap time in the opening free practice session of the 2026 Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island. The start of the weekend was heavily influenced by rider absences due to injuries, with Fermin Aldeguer sidelined and replaced by Iker Lecuona. A similar situation forced Aleix Espargaro out following his crash at the Indonesian GP, with Joan Mir stepping in once again, while Augusto Fernandez filled in for the injured Toprak Razgatlioglu.

Hitting the ground running, Marc Marquez clocked an impressive benchmark of 1'27.985 to top the timesheets. The eight-time world champion managed to stay 98 milliseconds clear of Raul Fernandez, who put in a remarkable shift for the Trackhouse squad. The Spaniard's performance was particularly heroic given he broke two fingers just a race weekend prior, shaking off an early crash at Turn 6 to quickly rejoin the session without losing valuable momentum.

Local hero Jack Miller electrified the grandstands by claiming the third-fastest time, treating his home fans to a stellar performance in what marks his final appearance at Phillip Island. The Australian finished just under a tenth and a half slower than Marquez. Marco Bezzecchi followed closely behind in fourth to place another Aprilia inside the top five, with Alex Marquez fifth as he works to rebuild his machine confidence, and Pedro Acosta rounding out the top six.

On the other side of the garage, Jorge Martin kept a relatively low profile to finish seventh. However, a vastly different story unfolded for Pecco Bagnaia, who struggled significantly to find his footing. The Italian found himself down in eighteenth place, over a second and a half adrift of his teammate, signaling an urgent need for adjustments ahead of the upcoming qualifying sessions.
