Audi suffered another major setback at the Miami Grand Prix as Gabriel Bortoleto encountered a brake fire at the end of the Q1 session. The incident marked the team’s second fire of the day, highlighting a severe reliability crisis.
Earlier, Nico Hulkenberg was unable to start the sprint race after a power unit fire on the way to the grid. Two separate fire-related failures in a single weekend suggest deeper underlying issues within Audi’s technical package.
From a technical perspective, brake fires are typically linked to overheating within the braking system, potentially caused by insufficient cooling, component stress, or imbalanced brake distribution. High ambient temperatures in Miami further increase the risk of such failures.
The situation is compounded by Bortoleto’s earlier disqualification due to an intake pressure breach, forcing the team into a rapid turnaround to ensure regulatory compliance while maintaining mechanical integrity.
Despite these challenges, Audi managed to send Bortoleto out for qualifying, demonstrating a rapid operational response. However, the recurring technical issues significantly compromised overall performance.
The consecutive fire incidents indicate that integration between the power unit, cooling systems, and mechanical components is not yet fully optimised. In modern Formula 1, system complexity means failures in one area can have cascading effects.
With qualifying affected and reliability concerns mounting, Audi faces significant pressure ahead of the main race. A comprehensive technical review will be essential to prevent further incidents as the 2026 season progresses.
