The Audi Formula 1 2026 project has taken a major step forward in restructuring its leadership team by appointing Thomas Fuhr as the new CEO of Audi Formula Racing GmbH at their powertrain facility in Neuburg an der Donau, Germany. This high-profile strategic appointment aims to bolster the power unit department as the Ingolstadt-based manufacturer intensifies preparations for its upcoming premier-class debut.
Thomas Fuhr brings over three decades of international engineering and executive experience to the table. Most recently serving as the Chief Technology Officer at Georg Fischer Building Flow Solutions, Fuhr also possesses deep roots in top-tier motorsport, having previously managed the Mercedes high-performance powertrain division as Managing Director between 2009 and 2012.
The appointment was met with strong endorsement from Mattia Binotto, who leads Audi's overarching Formula 1 operations. Binotto emphasized that Fuhr's technical acumen and leadership background make him the ideal candidate to steer the Neuburg facility, where the brand's maiden hybrid power unit was designed and brought to the track from scratch.

Reflecting on his new leadership role, the 61-year-old engineer expressed immense pride in taking on the challenge. I am proud to become part of the Audi Formula 1 project, and the opportunity to help shape Audi's future in motorsport is an incredibly exciting prospect. The team in Neuburg has developed an entirely new power unit and brought it to the track from the ground up, said Fuhr.
Fuhr also outlined his strategic vision for the technical department moving forward. I want to build on this work by pooling expertise from across the organization and creating the conditions required for us to compete at the absolute highest level. I look forward to working closely with Mattia Binotto, Christian Foyer, Stefan Dreyer, and the entire team, he added.
Adding to the praise, Jurgen Rittersberger, CFO of Audi AG and Chairman of the Shareholder Committee of Audi Formula Racing GmbH, echoed strong confidence that this key personnel acquisition will solidify the structural framework necessary for long-term competitiveness in the motorsport pinnacle.
