Kimi Antonelli has labelled Madring as the most complicated circuit on the 2026 Formula 1 calendar, both from a driving and engineering perspective. "I think it's one of the most complicated tracks," he told media including Motorsport Week on Thursday.
Antonelli pointed to the track's diverse corners: chicanes, fast corners, bent corners, and medium-speed turns. "You've got a lot of straight-line braking but also a lot of braking where you're still turning," he explained. He highlighted Turn 17 as a prime example where drivers brake while turning and then straighten the car. "It's a very tricky track, very challenging but very exciting at the same time with zero margin of mistake," he added.
From an engineering standpoint, Antonelli said finding a setup that works well across the entire lap is a major headache. "A setup that helps you in the chicanes might not help in the fast corners. There are always pros and cons," he said. He noted that the team has done extensive simulator work but will only know how accurate that preparation is once cars hit the track in FP1.
Antonelli's concerns were echoed by other drivers on Media Day in Madrid, with FP1 likely to raise more questions than answers. Teams will be scrambling to gather data on tyre behaviour and track characteristics before qualifying.
For Mercedes, this weekend is a test of their technical prowess. With new regulations still in their infancy, quick adaptation at a complex circuit like Madring could separate the front-runners from the midfield.
