The 2026 MotoGP world championship battle delivered an extraordinary plot twist as Jorge Martin was declared medically fit to participate in the opening practice session at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia. The key Aprilia Racing rider suffered a fractured right wrist during a high-speed crash in the Phillip Island Sprint race last weekend, yet he remains determined to keep his championship aspirations alive against all odds.

The dramatic turn of events follows a fierce on-track duel with title rival Marc Marquez in Australia last Saturday. Although the initial medical checks hinted at a severe trauma, subsequent evaluations revealed a less complex fracture than initially feared. Opting against an immediate flight back home, the Spanish contender traveled directly to Malaysia, enduring intensive round-the-clock therapy to maximize his physical readiness for the nineteenth Grand Prix of the season.

MotoGP medical staff officially greenlit his participation for Friday morning's initial practice session following Thursday evaluations in the paddock. However, his continuation for the remainder of the race weekend hinges entirely on a mandatory re-assessment immediately after the opening session concludes. The physical hurdles standing in his way are nothing short of extreme.

Speaking candidly to the media ahead of track action, the Spaniard admitted that standard daily routines have become monumental tasks due to his compromised right hand, noting that even brushing his teeth requires switching to his left hand.

“I feel reasonable. It could be worse, but also better,” Martin told reporters in Sepang on Thursday. “The first step is taken, which is trying to ride. Then we must see how I feel and what my possibilities are. We will decide based on that whether to continue the Grand Prix weekend. The only thing I know for sure is that my wrist is broken. I will try to ride with a broken wrist. It will be extremely difficult and probably very painful. I cannot even brush my teeth with my right hand right now; I have to use my left. Almost nothing works with my right, but maybe riding a motorcycle will.”

Given that Sepang places immense demands on the right hand for heavy braking zones and rapid acceleration phases, the physical handicap poses a massive risk. Fueled purely by his championship ambitions, Martin insists he would not take such risks under normal circumstances, making this weekend one of the most courageous displays in recent motorsport history.
