The 2026 Formula 1 season has introduced fierce technical challenges for Oscar Piastri, who is experiencing distinct difficulties with the latest McLaren machinery compared to team-mate Lando Norris. These recent struggles have effectively neutered what team boss Andrea Stella famously described as his on-track 'superpower'.
In qualifying head-to-heads, Norris currently holds the upper hand leading Piastri 16-8, though the actual average gap between the garage stablemates has remained remarkably close at just 0.040 seconds. However, a much starker performance gap has materialized across numerous grands prix, most notably during the race weekend in Austin.
During the race, Piastri averaged half a second slower than Norris on identical strategies, ultimately crossing the finish line 22 seconds behind. This performance deficit echoes previous difficult weekends such as Barcelona, where he lagged 35 seconds back, and Zandvoort, where he finished 32 seconds adrift, prompting him to admit there have been far too many races this year where his pace was a long way off.

Asked to pinpoint the exact issue behind his race pace struggles, Piastri remained blunt in his assessment. "It was slow. I don't have any more than that at the moment," he stated. He further explained how traffic complications involving Isack Hadjar and a race-long defensive battle against George Russell compounded a fundamental lack of underlying speed.
The knife-edge handling characteristics of the 2026 McLaren have clearly favored Norris, who has adapted far better to extracting peak performance from the chassis. As the engineering crew pours over telemetry data, both the team and driver remain focused on unlocking the hidden potential within the car ahead of the upcoming rounds.
