Stepping away from Formula 1 brought a wave of intense emotional turmoil for Daniel Ricciardo, who recently opened up about the heavy psychological burden and initial feelings of failure he experienced after officially hanging up his racing helmet.

The charismatic Australian driver, who first burst onto the F1 grid back in 2011, quickly established himself as one of the most beloved and recognizable personalities in the sport. Affectionately nicknamed the Honey Badger, his immense popularity soared alongside the global boom driven by Netflix's docuseries, even though his on-track journey was a turbulent rollercoaster.

Throughout a stellar career in the motorsport pinnacle, he accumulated eight Grand Prix victories and 24 podium finishes. His most successful chapter undoubtedly unfolded under the Red Bull banner, highlighted by an iconic triumph on the streets of Monaco and fierce wheel-to-wheel battles alongside teammate Max Verstappen.

However, subsequent moves in pursuit of an elusive world championship proved challenging. A difficult stint with McLaren saw him struggle for consistent pace, securing just a single emotional victory at Monza before eventually departing the team to make way for rising talents.

Reflecting on his career during a candid appearance on the F1 Beyond the Grid podcast, he explained how the relentless inner drive cultivated since childhood ultimately transformed into harsh self-criticism when results began to slip away.

"You start racing at such a young age, and over the years you build a ruthlessness, but that also is inward as well. You know, you can be very harsh on yourself and expect a lot from yourself," he shared regarding the intense internal expectations.

For the seasoned veteran, walking away from the grueling championship brought immediate personal disappointment, driven by the stinging perception that he had fallen short of his own rigorous standards.

"I think that my view of it was [that I was] failing, not performing to the level I needed to at the time or not being able to finish out the season or whatever. It’s then a sense of humiliation, like I failed and I didn’t do what I once could," he stated.

Despite public appearances showing him relaxed and enjoying social outings, he confessed that those moments served primarily as a shield to hide the profound pain and heartbreak lingering deep within his soul.
