Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Audi F1 Team has completed a major management restructure by appointing Allan McNish as Racing Director, following the unexpected departure of Jonathan Wheatley from the team principal role.
The change marks a significant step in stabilising Audi’s internal structure after a period of uncertainty at the start of the 2026 Formula 1 season. In the immediate aftermath of Wheatley’s exit, Mattia Binotto assumed leadership responsibilities, combining the roles of CEO and acting team principal as a temporary solution.
Binotto had already indicated that Audi would not pursue a direct replacement for the team principal position. Instead, the team opted for a distributed leadership model, appointing a senior operational figure to oversee trackside and performance-related responsibilities.

In his new role, McNish will take charge of day-to-day race operations, including sporting matters, engineering coordination, driver management, race strategy, and garage execution. He will also oversee on-track media activities and partner engagement, making his position central to Audi’s competitive performance.
This structure effectively places McNish as the operational lead at race weekends, while Binotto retains overall strategic control of the project. The approach reflects a modern Formula 1 management model, where responsibilities are divided to handle the increasing complexity of team operations.
McNish is a long-standing figure within Audi’s motorsport programme, bringing extensive experience across multiple disciplines. He previously served as team principal of Audi’s Formula E operation, leading the squad to the teams’ championship in the 2017–2018 season, demonstrating strong leadership and operational capability.
“It is a privilege to represent Audi on the most prestigious stage in motorsport. This project is ambitious, and my focus is to ensure that all aspects of our race operations perform at the highest competitive level,” McNish stated following his appointment.
Alongside his new responsibilities, McNish will continue to oversee Audi’s driver development programme, which remains a key component of the manufacturer’s long-term Formula 1 strategy.
Binotto highlighted McNish’s credentials as a decisive factor in the appointment, citing his combination of technical knowledge, racing experience, and leadership qualities as essential during a critical phase of the project.
“Allan brings exceptional racing experience, technical understanding, and leadership. He has been instrumental in shaping Audi’s preparation for Formula 1,” said Binotto.
This move represents Audi’s fourth management restructuring since announcing its Formula 1 project in 2022. However, the appointment of McNish is expected to deliver much-needed operational stability following recent disruptions.
With this revised structure, Audi aims to strengthen its internal foundations, improve trackside execution, and accelerate its development trajectory as it seeks to establish itself as a competitive force in Formula 1.
