Reigning champion Chaz Mostert has officially become the first driver to punch a ticket to Sandown courtesy of a dominant victory in the Surfers Paradise opener during a rain-hit 250km encounter at the Gold Coast 500.
Seven of the ten Finals contenders successfully managed to cross the finish line inside the top ten. However, three notable drivers failed to break into the points-paying upper echelon, placing Kai Allen, Ryan Wood, and Jack Le Brocq in serious danger of elimination ahead of Sunday's upcoming battle.
Allen dropped deep into the elimination zone after finishing in last place due to a costly technical issue that forced him into the pit lane for a third battery change. Meanwhile, Wood struggled significantly for outright speed throughout the afternoon, eventually settling for a lowly 14th place finish.

Jack Le Brocq suffered an equally difficult race, ending up down in 22nd after being spun around early on following contact with Cam Hill. At the sharp end of the championship fight, Matt Payne retained his grip at the top of the standings courtesy of a solid third-place podium finish.
Action at the Gold Coast 500 resumes on Sunday featuring qualifying at 11:20 am AEST, followed closely by the Top 10 Shootout at 12:05 pm AEST, and Race 2 scheduled at 2:45 pm AEST. Read our in-depth analysis and check the latest standings updates right here.
