Fernando Alonso has never shied away from discussing his legacy in Formula 1. But in a media session in Madrid, he placed his social impact in Spain above trophies and championships. "I feel honoured," he said, as quoted by Motorsport Week. That admission is not without reason: two decades ago, F1 races weren't even broadcast in Spain, and his family had to watch via German channel RTL.
Alonso's journey began in 2001 with Minardi, in an era of small cars with roaring V10 engines. That debut came when F1 was still a fringe sport in Spain. However, his world titles in 2005 and 2006 with Renault changed everything. Grandstands began to fill with a sea of blue and yellow, the colours of the Renault team at the time. Since then, F1's popularity in Spain exploded, and Alonso became an icon who inspired new generations of drivers like Carlos Sainz and Pepi Marti.
In the interview, Alonso highlighted the significant changes in his country. "There are maybe five, seven, ten percent of mechanics and engineers in F1 now from Spain," he added. According to him, that is concrete proof that his legacy isn't just about drivers, but about opening doors for Spaniards to be involved in various roles in racing. "That's one of the things I'm most proud of," he stated.
With 45 grand prix wins throughout his career, Alonso acknowledged that success on track often depends on external factors: the right car, the right time, and luck. "Winning races or championships if you have the car and you are in the right place, the 20 drivers here, they can have that opportunity," he said. "I was very lucky to experience that."
However, he emphasised that his biggest legacy is actually outside the cockpit. The transformation of Spain's racing landscape, from karting to single-seaters, even to rally, and his museum in Spain, stand as testament to Alonso's dedication. "I don't know, there are many things outside the car that maybe make me more proud of my career than the results itself," he concluded.
Alonso's impact on F1 in Spain is undeniable. He is not just a great driver, but also an ambassador who changed the way his country views the sport. From no TV coverage to hosting a vibrant Spanish Grand Prix, Alonso's footprint is felt in every corner of the paddock. Carlos Sainz, who is now his successor, also acknowledged Alonso's influence. "Fernando opened the door for all of us," Sainz said on a separate occasion.
With a career spanning more than two decades, Alonso remains a central figure in F1. His legacy is not just measured by trophies, but by how he inspired a nation to dream big. And for Alonso, that is a far more meaningful achievement than any championship.
