Yamaha's decision to bring Jack Miller into its official WorldSBK team for 2027 was not taken lightly. Yamaha Motor Europe sporting manager Niccolo Canepa described the Australian as an opportunity 'too good to miss'. After 15 seasons in grand prix racing, including 12 in MotoGP, Miller is set to embark on a new chapter in the production-based championship next season.
Canepa, himself a former MotoGP and WorldSBK rider, expressed his excitement. "We are hugely excited to welcome Jack Miller to Yamaha's WorldSBK project in 2027, and personally I am very happy to have him join our team," he said. "The opportunity to bring a rider of his experience and talent into our official team was too good to miss."
The decision also leverages Miller's familiarity with the Yamaha R1. Over the past two years, he has raced at the 8 Hours of Suzuka as part of Yamaha's factory entry. Additionally, his arrival coincides with Michelin replacing Pirelli as the WorldSBK tyre supplier in 2027. Miller knows Michelin tyres well, having raced on them for most of his MotoGP career, including all four wins and 23 podiums with Honda, Ducati, and KTM machinery.
Canepa emphasized that Miller's knowledge of Michelin tyres will be invaluable. "His Grand Prix experience, particularly his knowledge of Michelin tyres, will be extremely valuable for us," Canepa explained. "He has already achieved strong results with the R1 at Suzuka, so we are excited to see what he can do on the WorldSBK-spec bike and what he can contribute to the R1's continued development."
Beyond the technical side, Miller's charismatic personality is also seen as a boost for Yamaha's image. "Jack's personality and international profile will also be a great asset in strengthening Yamaha's presence and bringing even more attention to the WorldSBK Championship," added Canepa. "We are very much looking forward to starting this new chapter together."
The move comes as Yamaha seeks to return to winning ways in WorldSBK. The Japanese manufacturer has not won a race since Andrea Locatelli, who will be Miller's future team-mate, triumphed at Assen in 2025. This season, the R1's best result is a fifth place, while Ducati has been dominant, with Nicolo Bulega winning every race except one. Bulega is expected to move to MotoGP with VR46 Ducati in 2027.
Interestingly, Miller will join Yamaha as the manufacturer looks to revive its glory days. The last Yamaha rider to win the WorldSBK title was Toprak Razgatlioglu in 2021, who is currently Miller's team-mate at Pramac in MotoGP. Ben Spies is Yamaha's only other WorldSBK champion, having claimed the title in 2009.
With Miller's experience and skill, Yamaha clearly has high hopes for him to lead the R1 back to victory lane. The question now is whether Miller can be the catalyst for Yamaha's resurgence in WorldSBK. We'll see him in action from 2027.
