When Toto Wolff was asked who looks like the strongest contender for this season's Formula 1 title, his answer surprised many. The Mercedes team principal insisted it's still too early to favour one of his drivers, despite Kimi Antonelli leading the standings with authority.
The 2026 season has witnessed the resurgence of the Silver Arrows. After struggling in the ground-effects era, Mercedes is back on top. Antonelli, just 19 years old, leads the championship by 50 points over Lewis Hamilton. Six wins, five of them consecutive, plus three more podiums have made him a hot favourite for the title.
But Wolff is in no rush. "It's too early to say," he said. "I'm superstitious, even though the gap is 50 points. There are so many races to go, a DNF or two can just swing [the championship] massively, and we've not been great on reliability."

That concern is not unfounded. Throughout the first half of the season, both Antonelli and George Russell have suffered technical failures resulting in retirements. Both have already used up their pool of power units, meaning a 10-place grid penalty looms if they exceed the engine allocation.
Then there's the budget cap. With Malaysia returning to the F1 calendar, Wolff was asked if the extra costs would strain the team's finances. "That all has an influence," he explained. "Obviously, going to Malaysia is fantastic, but we also have to still monitor the costs that we have as a team. It's not related to Malaysia, it's more about when can we bring the upgrades – but we are."
Ahead of the Zandvoort round, Mercedes leads the constructors' championship by 72 points over Ferrari. The Brackley-based team aims to maximise every weekend to retain their lead. But with reliability still a concern, the road to the title remains long and uncertain.
