Williams Unveils FW07C Throwback Livery for Madrid GP

Williams is arriving in Madrid with a slightly different spirit. For the inaugural Spanish Grand Prix at the Madring circuit this weekend, the Grove-based team has unveiled a special livery inspired by the legendary FW07C—the car that secured the team's first Constructors' Championship in 1981. This is more than just a paint job; it's a tribute to Williams' rich history, showcased through the iconic white and green color scheme.

Those colors are not a random choice. During Williams' first golden era, the white-green livery was synonymous with Saudia Airlines' support. Now, title sponsor Atlassian takes on a similar role, bringing a wave of nostalgia straight to the paddock. Williams clearly wants to remind everyone—including themselves—of the days when they were a force to be reckoned with at the front of the grid.

That reminder feels especially relevant now, as Williams continues to fight for consistency at the sharp end of the field. Throughout this season, James Vowles' squad has struggled to challenge regularly at the front. The FW07C-inspired livery serves as a symbol that their ambition to rise again is deeply rooted in their past. As Vowles put it, the mission to return to the front of the grid cannot be separated from what they have already achieved.

A Bridge Between History and Future

James Vowles explained that this livery acts as a bridge between the team's past and its future. "Our mission to get back to the front of the grid is drawn from, inspired by and informed by everything we've done before," he said. "I am incredibly proud to celebrate that, through Atlassian's special livery, connecting the team we were at Jarama with the team we are becoming today."

He added that collaboration, technological innovation, and creativity are key to achieving their targets. "The car looks fantastic, and I cannot wait to see it lapping around Madrid," he concluded. Meanwhile, Atlassian Co-Founder and CEO Mike Cannon-Brookes offered a fresh perspective: "The best teams don't put their history in a trophy case. They wire it into the work."

On the other side, Carlos Sainz has a personal mission in Madrid. The Spanish driver will race in front of his home crowd for the second time this season. After his first home race elsewhere, Sainz will be eager to deliver a strong result for his fans. The extra energy from the stands could be just the boost he needs, and with this special livery, Williams will be hoping their performance is just as special.

Madrid is a new host for F1, replacing Barcelona, which has been the scene of many historic moments. The Madring circuit offers a different challenge with its modern layout. Williams, who once tasted glory at Jarama—a circuit also near Madrid—is now looking to write a new chapter. Will this nostalgic livery bring them luck? We'll find out when the lights go out this weekend.
