James Vowles, team principal of Williams, has revealed that the re-signing of Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon was crucial to boosting the team's morale. The announcement came amid speculation about Sainz's future, especially after Williams' disappointing performance in the 2026 season.
The decision to retain both drivers for the foreseeable future is seen as a strategic move. Vowles stressed that the drivers' trust in the team's project means a lot, especially as the team struggles at the back of the grid.
At Friday's press conference ahead of the Dutch GP, Vowles explained that the team's reaction to the contract extensions was very positive. "It's a team that's hurting; there's no doubt about it. We're not where we want to be; this is not what we planned for. So to have the news that two of your leaders are by your side, growing with you, and believe in the journey you're on is incredibly powerful for an organisation," he said.

Vowles also highlighted the drivers' off-track contributions. "Both drivers aren't just about what they bring on track; it's about the leaders they are behind the scenes. For example, when this winter went pretty poorly, both flew to the UK and spent time with the team to effectively just support them in every way they could. That's unusual, but it's an indication of who they are as characters," he added.
Sainz made it clear he wasn't ready to give up on the team, as he believes in the project and its future. "I believe in this project, and I want to be part of Williams' resurgence," Sainz said in his media session.
The decision provides much-needed stability for Williams amid major regulation changes that have left them behind. With both drivers committed, the team hopes to gradually rebuild their performance.
