Ty Gibbs Set for Toyota Wildcard Entry at Adelaide Supercars

Walkinshaw TWG Racing is reportedly poised to facilitate a third Supra entry for the final round of Toyota's maiden Supercars season. The proposal has backing from Supercars and Adelaide organisers, but is awaiting sign-off from the United States.

The driver in question is understood to be Ty Gibbs, the Joe Gibbs Racing star who scored his second oval victory of the Cup Series season last weekend. Gibbs, 23, is the grandson of team owner Joe Gibbs and has been vocal about improving his road racing skills to challenge three-time Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen.

This isn't without precedent. Last year, Austin Cindric of Team Penske embarked on an Adelaide mission, while Jesse Love competed in Super2. Gibbs has already proven his road course prowess, taking pole and being one of SVG's biggest threats at Sonoma. JGR has enlisted Jack Perkins, a Supercars co-driver and former NASCAR racer, as a coach for Gibbs at Sonoma and San Diego.

Walkinshaw TWG is well-placed to run a wildcard, with a spare Supra and leftover infrastructure from its recently closed Super2 team. The squad last ran a wildcard program in 2022, its final year with Holden, and has expressed continued interest.

"With our international connections, both through our directors and now through the Toyota global family, we are always investigating wildcard opportunities," a team spokesperson said. "We believe in the strength of them, especially with international star power, but have nothing confirmed or to announce currently."

Mark Warren, CEO of the South Australian Motor Sport Board, has declared the event's "ultimate ambition" to host NASCAR wildcards from all three marques. Talks for a Chevrolet wildcard at the Grand Final are also ongoing, with Team 18 able to facilitate an extra entry. Connor Zilisch, van Gisbergen's Trackhouse teammate, is the likely target.

Meanwhile, there are no signs of a Ford repeat, with homologation team Triple Eight already at capacity.
