Western Springs speedway users are confident they will win their legal battle against Auckland Council. Tensions are high as the council pushes ahead with the Western Springs Bowl redevelopment while court proceedings are still ongoing.
Speedcafe reports that speedway users were evicted from Western Springs after the council voted 11-8 in 2024 to consolidate racing to Waikaraka Park with an NZ$11 million injection. After plans for a football stadium fell through, the council voted 15-6 in 2026 to revamp the venue into a multi-purpose facility.
The decision sparked a judicial review in mid-July. In the meantime, the racing surface has been sown with grass and partly paved with concrete. The council claims the work is reversible, but the Western Springs Speedway Association failed to get an injunction to halt it.

Association spokesperson Jason Jones expressed disappointment that the council continued redevelopment despite the legal challenge. "They've pushed on regardless, even with the proceedings, which is rather annoying," he told Sport Nation. "There's a big difference between what's right morally and ethically compared to what is legally most times."
Jones said their legal team, including a King's Counsel specialising in government legislation, is very confident of winning. "The fact that they would push ahead with those works while the court proceedings are underway, it's very reckless. It's about ratepayer spending, and reversing those works if we win is an ongoing cost," he added.
He also criticised the construction of a permanent stage, which was supposed to be semi-permanent, limiting future uses. Jones said he met with supportive councillors but they face internal political pressure. "Throughout this entire process, they have kicked on, which is one of the big arguments we have in the High Court," he said.
Jones expects a decision from the Auckland High Court by the end of the year. Meanwhile, the Western Springs Bowl has hosted its first NPC rugby match and a sold-out Olivia Dean show moved from Spark Arena.
