Elfyn Evans managed to retain the lead of the 2026 World Rally Championship standings despite facing one of the toughest challenges of the season at Rally Portugal. The Toyota Gazoo Racing driver had the difficult task of opening the road during the first two days of the gravel rally, traditionally a major disadvantage because of loose surface conditions.
Even so, Evans successfully limited the damage throughout Thursday and Friday before eventually securing third place overall. The result delivered 22 valuable championship points in the fight for the 2026 world title.

Following Rally Portugal, Evans now holds a 12-point advantage over teammate Takamoto Katsuta in the championship standings. Katsuta himself completed the rally in fifth place after another consistent weekend performance.

One of the biggest changes in the standings came after Oliver Solberg climbed to third in the world championship. The young Toyota driver finished runner-up in Portugal after capitalising on major drama during the final day of the rally.
Solberg benefited after two other Toyota drivers, Sebastien Ogier and Sami Pajari, both suffered punctures on Sunday’s penultimate stage. The incidents ended Ogier’s hopes of victory while also dropping Pajari out of the podium positions.
Meanwhile, Adrien Fourmaux delivered one of his strongest performances of the season for Hyundai Motorsport. Although a mistake on Friday prevented the Frenchman from directly challenging for victory, he still collected an important 20-point haul after finishing fourth overall.
The result moved Fourmaux up to fourth in the championship standings. Hyundai also received a major boost after Thierry Neuville finally secured his first victory of the season.
Neuville collected a total of 30 points from Rally Portugal and significantly reduced the gap to Ogier in the standings. The victory represented an important turning point for Hyundai after an inconsistent start to the season.
On the other hand, Pajari endured a painful end to the weekend after appearing on course for a podium finish before Sunday’s final stages. A puncture eventually dropped the Finnish driver to seventh overall and cost him valuable championship ground.
Ogier suffered a similar fate. The reigning world champion looked set for victory before losing significant time with a puncture on the same stage. He ultimately left Portugal with only nine championship points and now sits sixth in the standings.
In the manufacturers’ championship, Toyota still maintains strong control of the 2026 campaign despite Hyundai reducing the gap slightly following Neuville’s victory in Portugal. Toyota’s lead over Hyundai now stands at 93 points.
The World Rally Championship season will continue in Japan later this month, where the title fight is expected to intensify further following the major drama that reshaped the championship battle in Portugal.
