Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Max Verstappen has received backing from Sebastien Buemi following his continued criticism of Formula 1’s new 2026 power unit regulations, with the Swiss driver stating that he “cannot disagree” with the four-time world champion’s views.

Buemi, who serves as a simulator driver for Red Bull Racing alongside his commitments in Formula E and the World Endurance Championship, emphasised that Verstappen’s experience and achievements give significant weight to his opinions. Having been involved in the team’s technical programme, Buemi is closely familiar with the development direction of Red Bull’s current machinery.

Red Bull has endured an inconsistent start to the 2026 season. A competitive showing in Melbourne was followed by a difficult weekend in Shanghai, where technical issues significantly impacted Verstappen’s results. He suffered a crash in the opening round due to a rear axle issue, while an ERS cooling failure forced his retirement from the Chinese Grand Prix.

Verstappen has been openly critical of the new regulations, previously describing them as “anti-racing” and comparing certain elements to “Formula E on steroids.” His concerns centre on the balance between energy management and on-track racing dynamics, which he believes has shifted too far away from pure competition.

“I think he’s achieved more than enough to be able to give his opinion, and I think his opinion is extremely important,” Buemi told RacingNews365.

Buemi also acknowledged similarities between the new Formula 1 regulations and Formula E, particularly in terms of energy deployment strategies. While he noted that some aspects may represent progress, others could be seen as detrimental depending on competitive context.

“But ultimately, I can’t disagree — I agree with what he says. I’ve been part of Formula E for a long time, and there are things that are quite similar, some that are better, and some that may be a bit worse,” he added.

He further underlined that regardless of regulatory constraints, Verstappen’s approach remains unchanged in terms of commitment and performance delivery. The Dutch driver continues to extract maximum performance from the car under all conditions, reflecting a professional mindset amid evolving technical frameworks.

As Formula 1 continues to adapt to its new regulatory era, feedback from leading drivers such as Verstappen is expected to play a critical role in shaping future refinements. The 2026 season now represents a key evaluation phase for ensuring that technical innovation aligns with the core principles of competitive racing.
