Marc Marquez Deeply Regrets Australian GP Cancellation at Phillip Island

The racing weekend came to a somber and frustrating end after severe weather conditions forced the absolute cancellation of Sunday's main races at the iconic coastal venue. Championship leader Marc Marquez could not hide his profound disappointment after missing a golden opportunity to extend his crucial lead in the fiercely contested 2026 world championship battle.

Race Direction was left with no alternative but to scrap the day's schedule following relentless rain and critically poor visibility around the circuit layout. The primary safety requirement—the operation of the medical helicopter—was entirely compromised, making it impossible to guarantee rider safety despite competitors noting that track conditions were technically manageable for racing action.

To salvage some connection with the devoted fanbase, the premier class grid completed a slow lap behind the safety car before parking on the main straight to salute the grandstands. This emotional farewell marked a poignant moment for spectators witnessing the historic venue's final scheduled appearance on the world championship calendar.

Reflecting on the premature conclusion, the star rider for the Ducati factory squad shared his genuine sorrow for the thousands of fans who braved the elements. According to reports from Motosan.es, he emphasized that the legendary track deserved a much more fitting send-off rather than an administrative cancellation.

«We wanted to give the fans a great show and Phillip Island did not deserve a final race with a cancellation. The conditions were acceptable, but unfortunately the medical helicopter could not fly. It was done for safety reasons, I am sorry for all of you, we were prepared as riders, but today it could not be. Thank you for supporting MotoGP,» the nine-time world champion stated during his media debrief.

Closing out the bittersweet weekend, the Spanish rider reflected on his fond memories of the seaside circuit, including his dominant pole position and Saturday sprint victory. With Sunday's points wiped off the table, his championship advantage remains locked at a slender ten-point margin over his closest rival, Jorge Martin, who had earlier been ruled out following a crash in the sprint race.
