“taken aback” by Elkann’s blunt demand that the drivers “talk less and drive more”.
“I think Lewis is still finding his way into this team and integrating himself into the culture of Ferrari,” Davidson told Sky F1. “Maybe he’s learned a lesson from how publicly the criticism came from the very top. For the chairman to openly criticise Lewis Hamilton’s comments like that would have taken him aback a bit.”
Elkann’s remarks came after Ferrari suffered a double DNF at Interlagos — Charles Leclerc crashed out while Hamilton stopped with a technical failure. The result dropped Ferrari to fourth in the constructors’ standings, with zero wins and Hamilton still waiting for his first podium in red.
Both Hamilton and Leclerc have since downplayed the incident, insisting their relationship with Elkann remains strong. However, Davidson questioned the chairman’s decision to air the team’s frustrations publicly.
“Why do your dirty laundry in public? This could easily have been handled behind closed doors at Ferrari,” he said. “I don’t understand why it had to be a public scolding.”
