Jari-Matti Latvala, current team principal of Toyota in the WRC, has revealed the heavy mental toll of his ongoing tax case. In an interview with Rally Journal, he admitted the legal proceedings have disturbed his sleep and even entered his dreams.
Latvala acknowledged that the trial, which has spanned three weeks and seen him spend seven days in court, has consumed almost all his attention. "I have to say it has really started to take its toll. It has even entered my dreams and weighed heavily on my mind. But now that it is about 85 per cent complete, it has started to get easier," he said.
The impact on his role as Toyota team principal has been unavoidable. Latvala admitted he had to cancel trips to Paraguay and Chile due to the court schedule. "Fortunately, when the schedule was being drawn up, I cancelled the trips to Paraguay and Chile. I would have had no chance of going there," he explained.

He also mentioned that discussions about next season with Toyota have not taken place because his focus has been diverted. "Unfortunately, that has fallen by the wayside amid everything else. Next year has not really been a priority," Latvala added. "I had hoped this matter would be resolved soon, but unfortunately that was postponed as well. The final hearing date is now 21 October, and by then we will already be quite a long way into the year."
Nevertheless, Latvala remains professional. He realizes that whatever the outcome of the trial, it will affect his career. "Of course, I also have to consider the implications of the outcome. Whatever the result may be, it will also have to be considered carefully from a professional perspective," he noted.
This case is a particular blow for Latvala, who is still active as a driver this season. The combination of driving, leading the team, and dealing with legal issues clearly drains energy. However, he is grateful that the process is nearing its end and he can start to breathe easier.
Going forward, Latvala hopes to resolve his legal matters and return full focus to Toyota. Discussions about the team's operations next season must also begin soon, given the increasingly tight competition in the WRC.
