Italian GP 2025: Verstappen Shines, McLaren Faces Team Orders Backlash

Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Max Verstappen of Red Bull dominated the 2025 Italian Grand Prix, setting a record for the fastest F1 race in history. Meanwhile, McLaren faced criticism for ordering Oscar Piastri to cede second place to Lando Norris after a slow pit stop. Here are the winners and losers from Monza.

Winner: Max Verstappen

Verstappen delivered a commanding performance, converting pole position into a victory with a 19.2-second gap over Norris. Completing 53 laps in 73 minutes, he set a new record for the fastest F1 grand prix. His dominance signaled Red Bull’s resurgence in a challenging season.

“It was an amazing win. The car felt perfect, and we executed the strategy flawlessly,” Verstappen said.

This marked his third win of 2025, reinforcing his status as a leading contender despite slim title chances.

Winner: Lando Norris

Norris benefited from McLaren’s controversial team orders. A 5.9-second pit stop cost him second place to Piastri, but the team’s directive ensured he regained the position. This result narrowed the championship gap to Piastri to 31 points, keeping Norris in the title hunt.

“I don’t know what happened with the pit stop, but we still scored good points,” Norris stated.

Loser: McLaren

McLaren faced intense scrutiny for their lap 49 team orders, which saw Piastri relinquish second place to Norris. Despite securing second and third, the decision sparked debate, with many deeming it unfair given Piastri’s championship lead.

“We agreed a slow pit stop is part of racing, so I don’t understand why I had to give up the position,” Piastri said over team radio.

The call risks disrupting team harmony, especially with both drivers vying for their first world title.

Loser: Oscar Piastri

Piastri was the primary victim of McLaren’s decision. Despite a strong race and capitalizing on a quick pit stop, he was forced to yield second place, missing a chance to extend his championship lead to 37 points. His frustration highlights the tension within McLaren.

Winner: Alex Albon

Alex Albon of Williams shone, finishing seventh after starting from the back. His consistent performance strengthened Williams’ position in the midfield battle, showcasing his skill and resilience.

Loser: Ferrari

Ferrari disappointed at their home race, with Charles Leclerc finishing fourth and Lewis Hamilton sixth. Despite strong fan support, Ferrari lacked the pace to challenge Red Bull or McLaren, adding to a challenging season.
