Zarco Set for Aragon Return After 100 Days Out Following Horror Crash

Johann Zarco has finally been given the green light to return to MotoGP racing. The LCR Honda rider is scheduled to make his comeback at the Aragon Grand Prix, August 28-30, after a long recovery from a horrific crash in Barcelona.

The incident occurred at Turn 1 during the first restart of the Catalan GP in May. The crash involving Luca Marini and Francesco Bagnaia saw Zarco's left leg caught in the rear wheel of Bagnaia's Ducati, resulting in a serious knee ligament injury and a deep burn in the same area.

Initially, doctors opted to wait for the inflammation to subside before operating. However, the final diagnosis from Dr. Bertrand Sonnery-Cottet in Lyon led to conservative treatment without surgery. That decision had LCR estimating a September return.

But positive progress came sooner. In an official statement, LCR revealed that Zarco's recovery has gone well in recent weeks. He has even started riding a Honda CBR1000RR and a supermotard as part of rehabilitation, as reported by Motorsport.com on August 7.

Zarco has been out for 96 days since the injury on May 17, missing six rounds: Italy, Hungary, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Germany, and Great Britain. If FP1 at Aragon begins on August 28, he will have been sidelined for over 100 days—a mental test for the Frenchman.

During his absence, LCR relied on Cal Crutchlow, who made a surprise comeback from retirement. The 40-year-old failed to score points in six rounds, though he came close in Hungary and the Netherlands with 16th-place finishes.

Although LCR trusts Zarco's recovery, Crutchlow will still travel to Aragon as a backup if Zarco fails the medical check by Dr. Angel Charte. This shows the team's readiness for any eventuality, while putting pressure on Zarco to prove his fitness.

Zarco's return is a breath of fresh air for LCR, which needs points. But more importantly, it's a testament to a rider's resilience in refusing to give in to fate. Aragon will be his stage to prove it.
