MotoGP, Sportrik Media - Alex Rins and Yamaha faced a difficult MotoGP 2026 weekend at Austin, as persistent technical issues exposed the scale of the manufacturer’s current challenges.

Rins’ United States Grand Prix was heavily compromised by recurring electronic problems affecting the M1, leaving him unable to extract competitive performance from the early sessions. The situation is compounded by Yamaha’s ongoing transition toward a new V4 engine concept, which has yet to deliver consistent results across race conditions.

During practice, Rins encountered significant issues with bike behavior, particularly under braking and direction changes. The Spaniard struggled to control the machine, running wide repeatedly and failing to maintain competitive pace. As a result, he finished at the bottom of the timesheets, over two seconds off the fastest lap and notably behind the rest of the field.

“During practice, the bike was not working. I was running wide under braking and couldn’t turn the bike properly. I felt useless on the bike. I asked myself, ‘what am I doing here?’” Rins said.

The difficulties were further compounded by a technical limitation within the garage. Of his two machines, only one could be repaired in time, and it was not configured with his preferred setup. This significantly reduced his ability to fight for a direct Q2 position and undermined his overall weekend strategy.

In the race, additional electronic issues persisted, particularly affecting throttle response. Rins reported inconsistent power delivery when opening the throttle, which compromised acceleration out of corners—one of the M1’s key weaknesses relative to its rivals. He ultimately finished more than 11 seconds behind the other Yamaha riders, underlining the severity of the problem.

“We had many problems this weekend. Issues with both bikes in practice and Q1, then a fuel pump problem that forced us to exit last from the pitlane. In these conditions, it’s difficult to keep pushing at 100%,” he explained.

The broader context highlights Yamaha’s ongoing competitive deficit. Compared to rivals such as Honda and leading European manufacturers, the M1 continues to lack performance in acceleration and overall stability, particularly under high-load conditions.

While team-mate Fabio Quartararo has been more vocal in criticizing the bike, Rins’ unusually direct comments in Austin reflect a growing internal frustration within Yamaha. The gap to the front has placed riders in a position where technical limitations and reliability issues combine to restrict both performance and confidence.

Beyond immediate results, the situation has implications for Rins’ future. Yamaha is evaluating its rider line-up ahead of the 2027 regulation changes, particularly amid uncertainty surrounding Quartararo’s long-term commitment. In this context, Rins acknowledged that current results are not strengthening his case to remain on the grid.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve enjoyed the bike. I don’t know if I will be here next year, and with these results, it’s clearly not helping,” he stated.

Overall, Yamaha’s combination of technical instability, transitional development, and competitive deficit has created a challenging environment for its riders in MotoGP 2026. For Rins, resolving these issues is essential not only for improving short-term performance but also for securing his position as the championship moves toward a new technical era in 2027.
