When the season opened with six straight victories, many assumed Mercedes would cruise to another title. But the mid-season reality tells a different story. The Brackley-based squad now admits it is slightly 'out of step' in an increasingly fierce development race.

Toto Wolff, Mercedes team boss, is not hiding from the harsh truth. Ferrari and McLaren have started stealing wins, and the comfortable advantage is now being eroded. Wolff acknowledged that his team has left points on the table and rivals have closed the performance gap.

“We have left points on the table, our rivals have reduced the performance gap, and we know the second half of the year will demand more from us than the first,” said Wolff. “The championships will be decided by execution and the rate of development we can bring to the car across the next 12 races.”

James Allison, Mercedes' technical director, explained that early design decisions have had a knock-on effect, negating their advantage as the season progressed. It is not about a bad car, but rather how fundamental choices are now limiting development pace.

Wolff remains optimistic. “Whilst we are slightly out of step with upgrades compared to our rivals, we have more performance to unlock and a clear development plan to do so,” he asserted. It is a statement of confidence, albeit with a growing to-do list.

The next round takes place at Zandvoort, a track Mercedes has not won at since its return in 2021. Notably, this will be the final Dutch GP for the foreseeable future, and Wolff is targeting a sweet farewell victory.

“Zandvoort has been a unique challenge since its return,” said Wolff. “It is a difficult track to master, the fans create an incredible atmosphere, and it has become a race that the teams and drivers look forward to. We have come close but never won there in the modern era. This is our final opportunity to change that, and that's a challenge we would like to meet.”
