Williams is utilizing the race weekend at the Circuit of the Americas for the 2026 United States Grand Prix to figure out why their latest Formula 1 challenger is performing so poorly. Having scored only 12 points and sitting ninth in the constructors' standings ahead of only Aston Martin and Cadillac, the Grove-based squad has shifted its main priority toward diagnosing fundamental design flaws rather than chasing immediate results.

The team had previously adjusted its developmental focus in hopes of hitting the ground running at the start of the new technical regulations, but those efforts have not paid off despite having a strong power unit. The Circuit of the Americas layout proved to be a severe mismatch for their current machinery, exposing major weaknesses in medium- and high-speed sustained corners, particularly throughout the demanding first sector.

Chief engineer Paul Williams explained that the team spent the opening practice sessions gathering crucial data for both the remainder of the current campaign and next year's car development program. Knowing the clear limitations of the vehicle in long-duration corners meant the American venue would naturally rank as one of their hardest challenges on the 2026 calendar.

Driver Carlos Sainz echoed those sentiments when speaking to broadcasters after jumping out of the cockpit, admitting that the struggles were entirely expected once the car encountered sweeping high-speed sequences. He noted that no miracles were anticipated for the Grand Prix outcome.

Sainz emphasized that instead of immediately introducing new parts for the upcoming year, the primary objective is mapping the current car properly to understand why its performance deficit is so severe. He also touched upon the bumpy nature of the COTA asphalt, acknowledging that while the surface bumps combined with high-speed turns make for an exhausting physical test, it adds a distinct character to the event.
