Williams Skips FW49 to Reveal FW50 for 50th F1 Anniversary in 2027

The current championship campaign has proven to be an extraordinarily tough challenge for Williams, despite the encouraging signs of recovery shown at the conclusion of the previous season. Hampered by persistent performance hurdles since winter testing, the historic British outfit made the strategic choice to redirect their main focus toward the upcoming world championship. This shift in attention goes far beyond purely technical recovery, as the 2027 season marks a monumental milestone in the illustrious history of the Grove squad.

Celebrating half a century of racing heritage, the team will officially mark their 50th anniversary in Formula 1. In honor of this golden jubilee, management has already locked in the official designation for their upcoming challenger, which will be proudly named the FW50. True to long-standing team tradition, the future challenger retains the foundational initials of founder Frank Williams, whose legendary organization secured nine constructors' titles and seven drivers' crowns.

Interestingly, the squad has chosen to bypass a sequential numbering system entirely to properly honor their golden anniversary. Rather than sticking to the standard numerical sequence following their current cars, they decided to jump straight from the theoretical designation to FW50, intentionally skipping the FW49 moniker. A remarkably similar strategy was previously deployed during their 40th-anniversary celebrations when the team transitioned directly from the FW38 to the commemorative FW40.

Comprehensive plans are already locked in place for a special exhibition showcasing the upcoming prototype outfitted in a celebratory livery. Scheduled to take place in London from February 11 to 28, 2027, the grand event is officially titled W50 Live: Williams, 50 Years of F1 Racing. Beyond the presence of the team's current race drivers, the celebration will welcome numerous iconic figures from the organization's rich history alongside some of their most legendary championship-winning machines.

Fans attending the exhibition will get an up-close look at the very first car produced by the team, the FW06, alongside legendary title winners such as the FW11B driven by Nelson Piquet in 1987 and the dominant FW14B steered by Nigel Mansell in 1992. The lineup will also feature the FW19 that claimed their final dual championships with Jacques Villeneuve, complemented by modern engineering feats including the FW26 and the record-setting FW38.
