The future of the pinnacle of motorsport is entering a massive transformation phase as Nikolas Tombazis unveiled the foundational pillars for Formula 1 regulations slated for the next decade, potentially debuting by 2030.

The governing body is currently hard at work on fresh rulebooks, preparing a radical shift in power unit concepts and beyond. According to the FIA single-seater department head, future machines will retain an electrical component, though significantly less powerful and designed primarily as an overtaking aid, without ruling out the potential retention of the adjustable rear wing system.

We are targeting a V8 engine with a smaller electrical component, Tombazis revealed during an exclusive interview detailing the upcoming technical direction.

A turbocharged setup will still be present but operating at lower pressures to effectively contain turbo lag. High-technology elements alongside sustainable fuels remain paramount to keep the sport relevant while safeguarding teams against an unsustainable cost spiral.

The revised electric deployment will serve as an extra power injection for attacking drivers. However, regulatory authorities will run exhaustive simulations and keep the DRS option open if pure electrical energy proves insufficient for close combat on track.

Once things settle and we analyze performance data, we can consider whether additional help from DRS is needed or not. We have that option available, he noted regarding the flexible approach.

Vehicle dynamics will heavily rely on chassis and aerodynamic evolution to deliver more exciting, significantly lighter, and highly reactive cars. The absolute priority centers on drastically reducing minimum weight thresholds.

While finalized figures are still pending internal correlation, the clear ambition targets shedding at least 60 kilograms from the current mass, maintaining lap times comparable to the current generation while optimizing aerodynamic efficiency.
