Friday pace-setter Ferrari fell short of securing a grand prix pole position for the 18th time in the 2026 Formula 1 season, this time at Austin, hampered by two familiar weaknesses and unfortunate timing on track during the crucial qualifying session.
Charles Leclerc and his teammate ended the session in fourth and fifth places respectively, though both drivers offered slightly contrasting views on why they failed to match the searing pace of the front-runners under the competitive pressure of Q3.
The underlying single-lap tyre warm-up weakness has continuously pegged Ferrari back on Saturdays throughout the year, contrasting sharply with their better race pace on Sundays. A sudden drop in track temperature by just one or two degrees in Q3 created a massive performance hurdle for the Monegasque driver.

"It's very disappointing because I think there are some other weekends where we've been strong in free practice, but then come quali, it's very clear that the others are just having a lot more in the straights, and it's very difficult for us to match that," Leclerc explained regarding the recurring top-speed deficit.
Leclerc stressed that the Italian squad must dedicate more effort to understanding the complex tyre behavior, noting that rival teams find it much easier to extract optimal lap time when conditions shift slightly outside the narrow operational window.
Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton experienced a completely different sensation regarding the tyre temperatures, reporting a clean out-lap and a well-balanced car handling without any noticeable grip issues during his high-speed runs.
Instead of focusing purely on tyres, Hamilton pointed directly toward the power unit performance deficit as the core limitation holding back Ferrari's overall competitiveness down the long back straight at the Austin circuit.
