Severe financial turbulence hitting the global automotive sector has forced German giant Volkswagen to take a drastic step by halting the development project of its upcoming fully electric Golf model at the Wolfsburg headquarters, following massive budget cuts.
News of this crucial suspension broke out after being reported by Reuters, explaining how the drastic cost-cutting measures affecting the German car manufacturer have finally impacted one of its flagship future models. The decision underscores the intense pressure currently facing the volume brand division.
“I know what the Golf means to Volkswagen and to Wolfsburg. That is why this decision was not easy for us at all,” stated Thomas Schaefer, CEO of the German group's volume brands, highlighting the heavy burden carried by the executive board.
The chief executive did not sugarcoat the reality, noting that the company simply cannot afford to push forward with the current workload under present financial strains. This move follows recent confirmations of a plan to slash 100,000 jobs and potentially shut down up to four manufacturing facilities across Germany, alongside the largest quarterly loss in a decade.
According to latest leaks, the Wolfsburg plant currently faces a 300 million euro deficit regarding cost-reduction targets. Despite the temporary halt, the company's works council maintains that the delay will not postpone the vehicle's market launch, though it remains a stark reminder of the fragile financial landscape.
