US GP 2026 Analysis: Ferrari Miscalculation Cost Leclerc Victory in Austin
TO NEWS OVERVIEW
Charles Leclerc worked his way through to second towards the end, but couldn’t work his way to P1

The Formula 1 race weekend at the Circuit of the Americas left Ferrari with significant strategic evaluations after Charles Leclerc was forced to settle for second place. The Italian marquee initially believed their pace would allow them to catch Andrea Kimi Antonelli in the closing laps, but the young Mercedes driver proved entirely too strong to overhaul.

The race had started with high promise when the Monegasque driver executed a stellar opening lap to pass Max Verstappen. Utilizing extra battery deployment to draw alongside the Red Bull through the high-speed Esses, Leclerc set an aggressive tone for what would become a thrilling afternoon of wheel-to-wheel combat in front of the packed grandstands.

Throughout the Grand Prix, Leclerc engaged in intense battles, completing notable overtakes on both Lando Norris and Verstappen to secure P2 at the checkered flag. Despite sweeping all practice sessions earlier in the weekend, Ferrari's momentum was slightly hindered during qualifying when both red cars were outqualified by their main rivals.

Speaking to media outlets including Motorsport Week after the race, Leclerc admitted he thoroughly enjoyed his early duel with Verstappen, acknowledging that the intense scrap allowed the race leader to build a comfortable early cushion at the front of the field.

“That was fun. I mean, I had quite a good start, and then I didn’t want to brake too late for Turn 1, just to keep an opportunity of trying to cross back at the exit of Turn 1,” he explained regarding the tense opening sequence.

He further elaborated on the tactical battle during those initial meters: “But Lewis got very, very close, and then I used a little bit more of my battery to get alongside Max in Turns 3, 4, and 5. I didn’t really know how it would go, but it was quite close, and it was fun.”

Analyzing the race strategy, Leclerc revealed that Ferrari’s internal numbers suggested Antonelli would encounter severe tire degradation towards the end of the race distance, a prediction that ultimately failed to materialize as the Silver Arrows maintained superb race pace.

“I even thought the victory was possible at one point when I saw Kimi going for the one-stop. Based on our numbers, he would start to struggle a bit more towards the end of the race,” the Ferrari charger stated.

Despite the tactical miscalculation, he remained pragmatic about the outcome: “He never really struggled towards the end of the race, but it was a fun race. It is a shame just that we came short of winning.”

Defending the team's two-stop strategy, Leclerc noted that both Ferrari and Red Bull shared identical conclusions regarding tire allocation and the high durability of the hard compound, though he conceded his optimistic pursuit ultimately cost him vital seconds.
