Toto Wolff Relives Mercedes Tension as Hamilton and Leclerc Clash at Ferrari
TO NEWS OVERVIEW
Toto Wolff has been reminded of the fierce Mercedes rivalry of the mid-2010s

The costly opening-lap clash between Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc during the Mexico City Grand Prix has brought back strong memories for Mercedes boss Toto Wolff. The intra-team squabble not only handed victory to Max Verstappen but also triggered a familiar sense of past internal rivalries.

Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur quickly intervened by holding a clear-the-air meeting with both drivers in Brazil on Thursday evening to squash any lingering bad blood ahead of the Sao Paulo Grand Prix weekend. The swift action was deemed necessary to keep the Scuderia focused on their overarching championship goals.

For Wolff, the situation acted as a complete deja vu. The Austrian executive had to navigate intense, escalating tensions between Hamilton and Nico Rosberg during their fierce championship battles at Mercedes between 2014 and 2016, ultimately understanding the immense pressure of managing two top-tier alpha drivers.

"Fred here doesn't need any advice from me, but it's like deja vu," Wolff stated. "You've asked me exactly the same questions for how many years? When you put two strong drivers in there, the best ones have edges and they want to win, and that is a situation that is always very difficult to cope with under the media spotlight."

During the height of the Mercedes civil war, Wolff notably threatened his drivers with suspension following their infamous crash at the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix. He noted that such dramatic escalation sometimes becomes necessary to reinforce respect for the thousands of factory employees working behind the scenes.

Meanwhile, Vasseur kept the specifics of his recent discussions with Hamilton and Leclerc strictly private, emphasizing that the absolute priority remains the collective effort and the dedication of the team's workforce.
