The Formula 1 weekend at Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace delivered a harsh reality check for Ferrari after Friday's practice sessions revealed a significant performance gap to the front-runners. The encouraging race pace that the Italian outfit displayed during the previous round in Mexico has seemingly vanished, leaving engineers with a massive mountain to climb ahead of the crucial qualifying sessions.

Early dominance was once again asserted by defending champion Kimi Antonelli, who not only topped the timesheets in the second practice session for the Sao Paulo Grand Prix but also proved to be the benchmark in long-run race simulations for Mercedes, leaving his closest rivals with plenty of data to analyze overnight.

Over a single flying lap, the 20-year-old Italian driver managed to pull roughly a quarter of a second clear of two world champions, Lando Norris and Max Verstappen. However, the gap widened dramatically during long-run stints, where the pace advantage averaged out to roughly half a second per lap over the chasing pack.

The red cars struggled immensely to find a stable platform across the bumpy surface of the Interlagos circuit. While the SF-26 manages reasonably well in the initial section of the lap, it bleeds crucial time through the twisty second sector and up the daunting power climb toward the start-finish straight, resulting in a deficit that can balloon up to a full second per lap in race trim.

Lewis Hamilton openly admitted the technical hurdles his team faced throughout a frustrating opening day in Brazil. "The first day was quite a challenge for us," the British veteran explained when addressing the persistent struggles with tire temperature management on a slippery track surface.

He further elaborated on the handling difficulties encountered during the afternoon running. "The track was slippery and bumpy, which made it really difficult to get the tires working in their optimum operating window. The first practice session was all things considered pretty okay, but things got much trickier in the second 60-minute session. We still have a lot of work ahead of us to find a breakthrough," Hamilton concluded.
