Kalle Rovanpera is back behind the wheel of a Rally1 car for the first time in nearly a year. The 25-year-old Finn drove a Toyota GR Yaris Rally1 during a promotional event in Tennessee last weekend. This moment has sparked speculation about his future in the WRC after he decided to step away from the world rally championship at the end of last season.
Rovanpera admitted he was happy to be back in a top-flight rally car. "It's the first time I drove a proper rally car since Saudi," he told DirtFish. "It was nice. You don't need to drive a car like this for very long before you realize that you missed it. It was nice driving Jonne's [Halttunen] car in Finland, but this was different."
However, the two-time world champion remained tight-lipped about a full-time return. "Like we talked about in Finland, nothing is decided for next year," he said. "I'm talking with Toyota about what's possible and let's see. And for America, it's a nice place and I wanted to make a small holiday. We went to a NASCAR race the night before, this was really cool."
Rovanpera's decision to leave the WRC at the end of last season was made to pursue a potential career in single-seaters. But his hopes of a Super Formula season were dashed when he suffered balance issues in high g-force moments. That setback forced him to explore other avenues, including a return to the rally world that made his name.
Since leaving the WRC, Rovanpera has been more visible in drifting. He appeared in Dream Run, a video project filmed on the closed streets of his hometown Jyvaskyla with a Toyota Supra drift car. "This was really nice," he recalled. "Of course, the driving was good, but it was also interesting to be part of this whole filming project."
Rovanpera's return to a Rally1 car raises a big question: is this the start of his WRC comeback? Toyota clearly wants to keep him, but no final decision has been made. If he returns, the balance of power in the WRC could shift dramatically, given his dominance with Toyota in the two seasons before his hiatus.
One thing is certain: Rovanpera still has the hunger to race. The promotional run in Tennessee might just be a warm-up, but for rally fans, it's a glimmer of hope that the star will soon be back on the stages. We'll just have to wait and see what the young talent does next.
