Red Bull Racing's strategy came under scrutiny after Max Verstappen failed to convert the RB22's strong race pace into victory at the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix. The Dutchman finished second, only 1.6 seconds behind George Russell, but the final pit-stop phase left clear questions over whether Red Bull missed its best chance to win.

The race at the Red Bull Ring was decided by a combination of outright pace, tyre management and strategic execution. Russell delivered an almost flawless race from pole position, controlling the tempo at the front before resisting pressure from Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli in the closing laps. Just 1.8 seconds covered the top three at the chequered flag.

Starting Fifth Made Verstappen's Race More Complex

Verstappen started from fifth on the grid, making his race far more complicated than Russell's. The early phase was spent clearing Antonelli, Charles Leclerc and, most importantly, Lewis Hamilton, while Russell enjoyed clean air and built an early advantage without immediate pressure.

Once Verstappen passed Hamilton, the pace of the RB22 became clear. He consistently reduced Russell's lead and, at times, lapped more than half a second faster than the Mercedes. That race pace suggested Red Bull had a car capable of fighting for victory.

Lap 43 Became the Strategic Turning Point

The key moment arrived on lap 43 when Russell made his final pit stop. Red Bull initially appeared ready to respond with Verstappen, but instead kept him on track. What looked like a calculated overcut attempt quickly became costly.

On fresh tyres, Russell was around 1.5 seconds per lap faster than Verstappen, whose older tyres had started to lose performance. When Mercedes stopped, Verstappen was only around one second behind. By the time Red Bull finally pitted him on lap 49, the gap had increased to roughly 11 seconds.

Verstappen's fresher tyres allowed him to reduce the deficit dramatically over the final 20 laps, but the time lost during those six extra laps proved impossible to recover. Instead of emerging from the pit cycle in position to attack, he spent the closing phase chasing Russell down.

Verstappen Felt Too Much Time Was Lost

After the race, Verstappen hinted that a more aggressive strategy may have given Red Bull a better chance. He felt the gap to Russell before the final stop was close enough to justify covering Mercedes immediately or attempting the undercut.

"Before the final stop, we were much closer. We tried to extend the stint, but I didn't have a good feeling with the rear and the tyres just couldn't hold on," Verstappen said.

He also admitted the extra laps before stopping may have cost more time than he later recovered on fresher tyres.

"Maybe we should have tried to be more aggressive and at least get ahead of George through the pit stop. But that's easy to say afterwards. Personally, I felt the laps I stayed out probably cost me too much compared to what I gained back on the newer tyres," he added.

Red Bull Still Leaves With Encouraging Signs

Despite the strategic debate, the Austrian Grand Prix gave Red Bull important encouragement. After a difficult run of races, the RB22 showed genuine race-winning pace again, while Verstappen proved he could take the fight to Mercedes even from a compromised starting position.

The main issue for Red Bull is no longer only speed, but execution when margins are extremely narrow. With Silverstone next on the calendar, the team's review of its Austrian strategy will be crucial if it wants to avoid losing another victory that appeared within reach.
