Red Bull is open to making a major rear-wing change after Max Verstappen crashed out of the British GP following an aerodynamic issue late in the race.

Verstappen spun off at Stowe after the rear wing on his car failed to properly re-attach airflow in time. The outcome was similar to the issue he suffered during Austrian GP qualifying, although Red Bull said the cause was different.

Verstappen had described the Silverstone incident as “super dangerous”. Team boss Laurent Mekies said the team understood its driver’s frustration, especially after two consecutive issues in high-speed corners sent the car into the gravel.

“Max is right not to be happy; it is very unpleasant for drivers to be let down by the car in high-speed corners in two consecutive races,” Mekies told media including RacingNews365.

“It is for two different reasons, and on a much smaller scale, it is also extremely unpleasant for us as a group to send our drivers to the gravel trap, so he is right to be unhappy.”

Mekies said Red Bull understood the failure that occurred at the Red Bull Ring, but early analysis suggested the Silverstone problem was a different type of failure. Even so, he stressed that the team would review every area to remove the chance of a repeat.

“I have no doubt that the team will put in place what is necessary for that not to happen again, even if we failed to do that on Sunday, and we take safety as seriously as one can do, and therefore the minimum Max can feel today is being unhappy.”

“We certainly understand what happened at the Red Bull Ring, we won't go into the details because I don't think it will be right, but we understand the failure.”

“From the early analysis, we have suffered a different type of failure, and it doesn't make it better, but we are going to review to make sure we leave zero chance.”

“We will do whatever is necessary to be on the safe side.”

When asked whether Red Bull could return to an older rear-wing concept without the Macarena opening, Mekies indicated that the option remains possible. The Macarena rear wing was introduced in Miami and is now part of the technical review after two consecutive failures affecting Verstappen.

“We have raced quite a few races now with that concept, and it is too early in the analysis to establish whether it is an issue with the concept, but we are going to leave no stone unturned when it comes and all options are possible.”

The review now becomes a key technical decision for Red Bull before the next round, as the rear-wing issue affects not only performance but also driver confidence in high-speed stability. If a concept change is required, Red Bull must balance safety, aerodynamic efficiency and maximum RB22 performance.
