FIA to Ban Team Collusion in Formula E from Next Season

The FIA will tighten its sporting regulations in the Gen4 era of Formula E to prevent teams from colluding to "manipulate" races. This move comes after the chaotic London finale, where Dan Ticktum admitted to slowing down in qualifying to help factory Porsche driver Pascal Wehrlein reach the final duel.

The new clause, published in the General Provisions for the 2026-27 season in June, explicitly prohibits any concerted instruction or agreement between competitors entered under the same manufacturer that interferes with race action. Violations could lead to disciplinary measures or sporting penalties under the FIA International Sporting Code.

However, team orders within a single team will still be allowed next season, meaning a team can instruct its drivers to assist each other as long as it is fair on track and does not violate regulations.

Ban on Cross-Team Coordination

The key change is that any overt coordination involving two or more teams, whether representing the same manufacturer or not, will be prohibited. FIA's Formula E chief Pablo Martino explained that instructions between team A and team B will be forbidden, aiming to prevent manufacturers from manipulating competitions through multiple teams.

This targets the significant influence manufacturers hold over customer teams, with agreements often extending beyond powertrain supply. The new regulation seeks to preserve the integrity of the championship and ensure fair competition.

The rule will take effect from the 2026-27 season, marking a significant step in Formula E's governance as it transitions to the Gen4 era.
