Heading into the 2026 MotoGP Australian Grand Prix, Raul Fernandez arrives with a mix of high motivation and significant physical doubts. The Spanish rider comes to Phillip Island carrying fond memories of his breakthrough premier class victory, yet he must deal with the harsh reality of recovering from two fractured fingers on his right hand following a crash during the Sprint race in Indonesia.
Despite managing an impressive runner-up finish in Sunday's main race at Mandalika, the Trackhouse Racing star admits he is still not 100 percent fit. During Thursday's official press conference, he acknowledged that his recovery is heading in the right direction, but he remains cautious about how his hand will respond to the physical demands across the upcoming practice and qualifying sessions.
Phillip Island holds a special place in Fernandez's career, but repeating last year's heroics will prove to be an uphill battle. Alongside his lingering physical limitations, the competitive landscape has shifted dramatically with the return of major title contenders who missed out on the action during his previous triumphs at the iconic coastal circuit.

Assessing his prospects for the weekend, the Spaniard emphasized that managing the pain and adapting to the notoriously unpredictable local weather will dictate his limits on the Aprilia machine. "Mi condicion fisica, en comparacion con el ano pasado aqui, es un poquito peor. Pero, en comparacion con Mandalika, ha mejorado. La verdad es que creo que puede ser un buen fin de semana para nosotros, pero no estoy al 100% fisicamente, asi que tendre que gestionar la situacion con el equipo y luego ver que podemos hacer," he stated regarding his current fitness level.
With heavyweights like Marc Marquez also on the grid this time around, Fernandez prefers to take a cautious approach, focusing entirely on daily garage work rather than setting unrealistic expectations before testing his physical boundaries on track.
