Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has openly claimed that the global fame enjoyed by former Haas boss Guenther Steiner is entirely thanks to the Netflix series Drive to Survive, rather than any staggering on-track achievements.
Despite both veterans having spent decades in the Formula 1 paddock, Steiner only became a household name worldwide after the behind-the-scenes documentary series aired. Steiner briefly worked alongside Horner at Red Bull back in 2005 before venturing into NASCAR and later spearheading the American outfit's entry into the premier class until his departure at the end of the 2023 season.
While promoting his own autobiography, Horner spoke to Autosport about how television production shapes public perception through hours of heavy editing. The British team boss emphasized how the documentary successfully lifted the lid on hidden rivalries and unique personalities within the sport.

"These guys are making a TV show," Horner stated, explaining the nature of the production process. "So they take hours and hours and hours of footage, and it’s all about how you edit something."
"You can either make somebody look like the villain or the hero, or vice versa. That show has been incredibly successful because it suddenly lifted the lid on some of the rivalries, the personalities, the drivers’ personalities, some of the characters," he continued, adding a cheeky remark about his former colleague's lack of silverware.
Despite the lighthearted jab regarding podium finishes, Horner was quick to praise Steiner for successfully introducing an entirely new demographic of fans to Formula 1 through his outspoken and unfiltered persona captured on camera.
"But good for him. He is a character, quite a scary character when he worked for us, but yeah, he’s brought a whole new fan base into the sport, which has been fantastic," Horner concluded, reflecting fondly on their early days together.
