The world of international rally is in mourning. Alex Fiorio, the Italian rally driver whose name is synonymous with the golden era of the Lancia Delta, has passed away at the age of 61. His father, Cesare Fiorio, and the entire family confirmed the loss of the man born in Turin on March 10, 1965, after a battle with stomach cancer over the past few months.
Fiorio was more than just a big name on the national stage. Since his World Rally Championship (WRC) debut in 1986, he immediately showed his class. The pinnacle came in 1987 when he clinched the world title for production cars (Group N) with the Lancia Delta HF 4WD. A year later, he finished third in the final WRC standings, then moved up to runner-up in 1989, only behind his teammate, Miki Biasion.
Unfortunately, from the 10 podiums he collected throughout his WRC career, the elusive first victory never quite materialized. Despite this, Fiorio remained one of Italy's rally icons. After his peak years, he continued to compete in European events, securing three consecutive wins at the Rally Cyprus for the European championship, as well as a category win at the 2002 Rally Finland.

Fiorio's passing leaves a deep void for his extended family: father Cesare, mother Francesca, siblings Cristiano and Giorgia, wife Oxana, and his children, Mariapaola and Francesca. In an official family statement, they remembered a man who was always surrounded by love until the very end.
The rally world has lost one of its true fighters from a generation that will never be repeated. Memories of his battles on gravel and asphalt, and his characteristic smile on the podium, will forever live in the hearts of fans. Rest in peace, Alex.
