There is a summer that never stops inventing new ways to keep us from getting home safely. Beaches that empty at three in the morning, clubs that push the music a little further, and roads that seem made to test the invincibility of those in their twenties. Then, suddenly, someone decides to say: enough.
Starting this weekend, from the Roman coast to Salento, the “Questa sera guido io” (Tonight I'm driving) campaign kicks off. The State Police, ANIA Foundation, nightclub and beach resort unions, and FederBalneari Italia are joining forces. A historic alliance: institutions, insurers, and those who sell fun are teaming up to remind young people that fun and safety aren't enemies, but two things that can go hand in hand if someone makes a small gesture.
The gesture is ancient yet modern at the same time. Someone in the group decides not to drink. Because someone has to drive the others home. They're called the designated driver. Once they were called “the most alert” or “the one with the best seat.” Now they get an official name and a reward: a non-alcoholic aperitif, a disposable breathalyzer, maybe a free ticket for the next visit. Nothing heroic. Just a bit of civic sense disguised as friendship.
Highway patrol officers will be at the venues, chatting, handing out flyers, and showing videos. So alongside checks on roads leading to the beach (which will be strict), there will also be what the Highway Patrol calls “presence” – dialogue. That thing road safety campaigns usually forget: speaking the language of those dancing, not those reading the highway code by candlelight.
It's a small, almost trivial thing. Yet, if you think about it, it's one of the few sensible ideas out there. In a country where every summer roads fill with statistics no one wants to read, someone has decided to bet on common sense instead of just sanctions. To reward those who drive sober instead of merely punishing those who don't. To turn abstaining from alcohol into a shared experience, not a mortification. Pretty cool, right?
