Oscar Piastri has opened up on his F1 2026 struggles, admitting it's 'very easy' to get caught in a downward spiral. The McLaren driver's naturally smooth style clashes with the new-generation cars, which demand constant micro-corrections.
The Australian hasn't won since the 2025 Dutch GP, and his form has dipped significantly this season. With downforce slashed compared to 2025, the cars are harder to master, especially for a driver who relies on instinct and fluidity.
Norris Contrast: Smooth vs. Aggressive
Team-mate Lando Norris has adapted better, leading Piastri by 55 points in the standings. McLaren boss Andrea Stella believes Piastri's issues are purely technical, as he can no longer drive through 'pure instinct'.
After finishing sixth at Zandvoort, 32 seconds behind Norris, Piastri was determined to find answers. He now believes he has some, though he admits the problem isn't as simple as just low grip.
Searching for Answers Under Pressure
"Qualifying at Zandvoort looked significantly better, and we're trying to extend that to the races. We've got some pretty good answers to why it was challenging," Piastri told media, including RacingNews365.
He explained that the issues aren't recurring; it's always something different. "There are a lot of various things tied up. It's not as simple as struggling with one thing. We just need time and experimentation to find what makes us quicker," he added.
Piastri acknowledged the fine line he's walking. "When you're comfortable, everything becomes subconscious and easy. But when things aren't comfortable, you have to think more, and that's why it can unravel quickly," he explained.
Despite the challenges, he remains confident. "I'm confident we're finding the right answers and a way forward. It's about catching things quicker and adapting faster through the weekend," he concluded.
