Sergio Perez believes he has around three more years left in Formula 1 and wants to dedicate that time to helping the Cadillac project grow from the ground up, a challenge that keeps him motivated after a year away.
The Mexican lost his seat at Red Bull at the end of 2024 following a tough campaign. His form dipped after a strong start to 2023, and in 2024 he finished eighth in the standings with just four podiums. After a year on the sidelines, Cadillac signed him to partner Valtteri Bottas, giving him a key role in developing the new team.
Speaking on F1's Beyond the Grid podcast, Perez said the project gives him a fresh sense of purpose. "I really feel like this is a project. Building a team from scratch and starting from the back motivates me a lot," he said.
He also explained that the time to retire will come when his "will" and focus start to fade. "There's a certain age when you start to drop. It's the engine inside you. When you go away and think less about the car or the engineers, that's the first alarm," he added.
With roughly three years in mind, Perez hopes to leave a lasting legacy at Cadillac. He knows few drivers get the chance to build a team from zero, and he doesn't want to waste it.
His decision to stay in F1 with this new challenge is about more than just chasing wins; it's about proving that a veteran's experience can be the foundation for a new team to compete in the future.
