MotoGP, Sportrik Media - Pedro Acosta has described the planned MotoGP street race in Adelaide from 2027 as “pretty good” in concept, yet also “strange”, following confirmation that the Australian Grand Prix will leave Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit.
The FIM MotoGP World Championship confirmed that from 2027 the Australian round will relocate to a new street circuit in Adelaide, marking the series’ first street-track event in Australia. The decision followed the Victorian government’s rejection of a proposal from Dorna Sports (MotoGP SEG) to move the race to Albert Park, despite previously pledging funding to upgrade Phillip Island’s infrastructure.
Fan reaction has been largely critical, with Phillip Island widely regarded as one of the championship’s classic venues despite fluctuating attendance figures in recent years. Acosta, however, expressed curiosity about the new format, referencing his appreciation for road racing events.

“A race on a street circuit sounds pretty good, knowing that I love the Isle of Man,” Acosta told media ahead of the Buriram pre-season test.
“But there are a lot of people who used to hate that championship, so it’s quite strange.”
MotoGP historically had links to the Isle of Man TT, and the inaugural 1949 world championship season began there. Over time, however, the championship distanced itself from road racing due to safety considerations and modern sporting direction.
While riders have shown interest in the Adelaide project, there remains a sense of regret about leaving Phillip Island behind.
“Ultimately, I think it’s the only legendary track still on the calendar, a circuit from the old days,” Acosta added.
“It’s quite sad to lose it and see that many tracks could be dropped from the calendar.”
Tech3 rider Maverick Viñales adopted a pragmatic tone regarding the relocation.
“Obviously, Phillip Island is a beautiful circuit, but if the championship changes, surely there is a reason. If we have to go to another circuit, we will go, and we have to face it in a positive way.”
