Former Formula 1 driver Riccardo Patrese believes that Ferrari must fulfill every request from Lewis Hamilton. He sees the seven-time world champion as a valuable asset that can help the team climb out of its slump and return to the front.
Patrese shared his thoughts in an interview with talkSPORT BET. He emphasized that Hamilton's experience from years at Mercedes, including multiple titles and victories, is crucial to improving the team's situation, which has not won a championship in nearly two decades.
Hamilton's Experience Key
“For Ferrari, having Hamilton is positive because he has gained great experience after many years of success with Mercedes and many wins,” Patrese said. “And it's positive that Hamilton can put his experience at the service of the team to improve the situation. Obviously, Ferrari is not in an ideal situation, which explains why they haven't won a championship for almost 20 years. For Ferrari, having a person like Hamilton who can give the right advice is positive.”
He added that advice from a driver of Hamilton's caliber could be a game-changer. “I wonder if some of these news items are just newspaper talk – it's hard to know how much is true, since journalists like to spice things up. Everyone, especially in Italy but also around the world, would like to see Ferrari win. I think they've made a step forward, but they still don't have the pace to compete for the championship with Mercedes and Kimi, who is currently an exceptional opponent.”
Progress Not Enough
Patrese acknowledged that Ferrari has made progress but lacks the pace to fight for the title against Mercedes and Kimi Antonelli, who is performing exceptionally. “They need to work on it, and if Lewis sends a note to the top management, then it's good for Ferrari because he will have good ideas on how to improve things. It would be worse if he had nothing to say.”
With the season finale approaching, Ferrari must give meaning to their campaign and build momentum for 2027, when new power unit regulations are expected to bring a significant step. Listening to Hamilton could be the first step.
