Pascal Wehrlein converted pole position into a crucial victory in the opening race of the 2026 Shanghai E-Prix. The Porsche driver mastered wet conditions at Shanghai International Circuit and significantly reduced Mitch Evans’ lead in the Formula E title fight.
The entire Shanghai weekend schedule had been moved forward by three hours because of adverse weather forecasts. Rain still began to fall moments before the lights went out, increasing the pressure on drivers to gain track position before conditions deteriorated.
The early phase of the race was aggressive because the threat of heavy rain made running near the front especially valuable. By the end of lap 18, the worst of the rain had not arrived and every driver had already used Pit Boost, pushing energy strategy into a decisive phase.

The situation changed dramatically one lap later when heavy rain hit the circuit and triggered a brief safety car period. Once racing resumed four laps later, Wehrlein immediately pulled clear and maintained control to win by several seconds.
The biggest impact came in the championship standings. Evans started second but slipped backwards to finish eighth, cutting his lead over Wehrlein from 19 points to only three.
Jaguar still recovered a strong result through Antonio Felix da Costa, who finished second. Jake Dennis continued his momentum after winning in Sanya by taking third for Andretti, while Felipe Drugovich completed a three-four result for the team.
Nyck de Vries finished fifth for Mahindra in a race heavily shaped by changing track conditions. Other title contenders failed to maximise the opportunity, with Edoardo Mortara finishing 10th and Oliver Rowland only 13th.
Wehrlein’s victory makes the second Shanghai race increasingly important for the direction of the title battle. Evans remains the championship leader, but a three-point margin means momentum has shifted strongly towards Wehrlein heading into the next phase of the 2026 season.
