Oscar Piastri has played down concerns that his position at McLaren could be threatened by the potential arrival of Max Verstappen. The Australian stressed that the team has repeatedly expressed its satisfaction with his performances.
Speculation surrounding Verstappen’s future has intensified in recent weeks following reports that the Dutch driver’s representatives initiated contact with McLaren. However, there has been no official confirmation of contract negotiations or a planned move to the Woking-based team.
Several reports have suggested Verstappen could be paired with reigning world champion Lando Norris. That scenario would theoretically require one McLaren seat to become available, with Piastri identified as the driver who could potentially lose his place.

“For me, it doesn’t mean much. Obviously, Max is the talent he is and is looking around,” Piastri told media including RacingNews365.
“I’m very happy with where I am. I’ve been told multiple times that the team are happy with me, and I trust them,” he added.
Piastri is currently competing in his fourth season with McLaren in Formula 1. The relationship also carries contractual protection after the team announced a multi-year extension at the beginning of the 2025 campaign.
That agreement forms the main basis of Piastri’s confidence that the Verstappen rumours do not alter his position. McLaren has not indicated that it plans to replace the Australian or end the partnership before his contract is completed.
“I’ve also got a contract in place as well, so for me it doesn’t change anything. I’m just trying to build on the success that we’ve had,” Piastri said.
McLaren’s current situation makes any potential Verstappen signing complicated because both Norris and Piastri hold long-term agreements. Any change would therefore require a major decision involving one of the two drivers who have formed the foundation of the team’s recent recovery.
Piastri is choosing to remain focused on performance and development with McLaren rather than responding to every movement in the driver market. Until an official announcement is made, the Norris-Piastri pairing remains the established basis of the team’s Formula 1 project.
